A singer responsible for one of Broadway's top moments will be the first performer in The Cabaret's new building.
Jennifer Holliday, best known for playing Effie "Melody" White in "Dreamgirls," will sing for the grand opening in late March. Holliday co-created the part and belted out the famously heartwrenching ballad, "And I Am Telling You, I'm Not Going" in the 1981 musical.
For the role, she won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical and a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocalist. More recently, she performed in the revival of "The Color Purple" on Broadway.
Holliday's performance will take place in The Cabaret's soon-to-be-opened space at the Metzger Building at Ninth and Pennsylvania streets downtown. The intimate performing venue, which regularly brings Broadway stars to Indianapolis, will seat 172 people and have nearby easily accessible parking options.
The spot will share an entrance with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and be next to Gallery 924. With the new Phoenix Theatre a few blocks away at Illinois and Walnut streets, The Cabaret is helping to define a new cultural area Downtown.
Tickets and Holliday's performance date are yet to be announced. Updates will be posted on The Cabaret's website at thecabaret.org.
