Jonathan Groff, one of the most exciting talents in the industry, taught a Master Class at The Cabaret on October 13th, 2012. He originated the role of Melchior Gabor in the Tony Award-winning musical,Spring Awakening. His performance of this role earned him a 2007 Theatre World Award, in addition to Tony, Drama Desk, and Drama League Award Nominations.
Jonathan has also appeared in productions of Hair, Prayer for My Enemy, and The Singing Forest. He is possibly best known as Jesse St. James on Fox’s hit comedy series, Glee. His other TV and film credits include The Good Wife, Boss, and Taking Woodstock. Here are three of his best tips for performers:
1. Practice performing a song the way its never been done before — taking a song to a new place.
2. Slow it down, play it sexy, play it differently so the audience hears it for the first time.
3. Look at the writer’s punctuation when learning a new song – it often signifies a change in emotion or tone.
